Can You Hike in Wool Underwear?

Wool usually brings to mind thick sweaters, not summer hikes. We get it. But there’s one kind of wool that flips the script — Merino. It's not just for staying warm. It’s for staying cool, dry, and comfortable even when the sun’s beating down and the trail’s heating up.

So, can you hike in wool underwear? Totally. Here’s why it’s actually a smart move.

What makes Merino wool different?

Let’s clear something up first: not all wool is that scratchy stuff from your childhood. Merino wool is a whole different game. It’s finer, softer, and built to perform.

Why it’s worth considering:

  • Super soft — Merino fibers are much thinner than regular wool. No itch. No bulk. Just comfort.
  • Temperature control — It keeps you cool when it’s hot, and warm when it’s cold.
  • Moisture-wicking — It pulls sweat off your skin and dries fast, so you’re not stuck feeling clammy.
  • Naturally odour-resistant — You can wear it for days without it getting funky.
  • Eco-friendly — It’s a renewable fiber that biodegrades naturally. Good for you, good for the planet.

If you’re new to it, our Merino wool underwear is a great place to start.

Why it works for warm weather hikes

You might not think of wool as your go-to summer gear, but merino changes that. Here's how it holds up when the heat’s on:

  1. It keeps you dry (and stops chafing)
Hiking in hot weather means sweat, and lots of it. Merino pulls moisture off your skin and dries fast, helping you avoid that sticky, sweaty mess. It also cuts down on chafing, which can ruin a long hike fast.
  2. It regulates your temperature
Merino adapts to what your body needs. When it’s hot, it helps you release heat. When temps drop, it keeps you warm. No need to change gear as the day shifts.
  3. It soesn’t stink
Merino fights odour naturally, so you can wear it for days without clearing out the tent. It’s a huge plus if you’re packing light or hitting the trail for multiple days.
  4. It’s soft enough to forget you’re wearing it
No scratch. No weird seams. Just a smooth, soft feel, even in high-friction areas. That’s key when you’re logging long miles.

How to choose the right Merino underwear

If you're going all-in on merino, make sure you’re picking the right pair. Here’s what matters:

  • Fabric weight — For warm weather, aim for 150–180gsm. It’s light, breathable, and ideal for summer.
  • Fit — You want snug but not tight. Too loose = bunching. Too tight = no airflow.
  • Seam construction — Look for flatlock seams. They help avoid rubbing and irritation.
  • Blend matters — A touch of nylon or elastane can boost durability and stretch without killing breathability.

Merino vs. Synthetic

Feature Merino Synthetics
Softness Super soft Sometimes scratchy
Odour resistance Excellent Poor
Moisture management Great Good
Breathability High Decent
Drying time Moderate Fast
Eco impact Low High
Multi-day comfort Top-tier Not great

Bottom line: synthetics dry faster, but that’s about their only edge. For comfort, odour control, and environmental impact, Merino wins.

Good Quality Product

Comfortable out of the box and after washes. What sets these apart is the weight of the fabric, quality of the sewing, and the comfort of the waist band. I have tried several brands of merino wool over the years, and many (even Patagonia) made boxers that are too thin to holdup against multiple washes. Isobaa boxers can be worn for several days without becoming unpleasant, thus excellent for travel.

Great quality

I bought some hiking socks and some merino boxers. The quality is great and they wash well without losing their shape or shrinking. (I do wash them on a low setting with a wool detergent as well). This is my second purchase of these items, basically to stock up! They're great for everyday wear as well as more outdoorsy activities. Highly recommended.

Most comfortable boxers I’ve ever worn!!

I bought Isobaa boxers these as a trial not knowing what to expect and have been converted ever since. These are my second pair now and I never realised how much joy a pair of boxers can bring!! I look forward to putting them on each morning!

Quick tips for hiking in Merino

  • Pack two pairs — Wear one, air the other out. Rotate daily.
  • Don’t overwash — Merino stays fresh longer. When you do wash it, go cold and line dry.
  • Stick to your size — A tight fit kills airflow. Don’t size down.
  • Layer Smart — Merino makes a great base layer for shifting conditions.
