Can You Put Merino Wool in the Washing Machine?

Merino wool is naturally soft, breathable, and odour-resistant, but many people worry about washing it. The good news: yes, you can wash most merino wool in the washing machine, as long as you follow the care instructions.

Always read the care label

Different merino items can have different washing requirements. Some blends or weaves are sturdier than others. Always check the care label inside your garment: it’s your best guide. If it says machine washable, follow the instructions for temperature and cycle. We almost always recommend washing at 30°C.

Our Merino Insulated Jacket is dry clean only.

Choose a gentle cycle

For most merino wool, use the wool, delicate, or hand wash cycle at 30°C or below. Avoid hot washes and fast spins, as they can shrink or stretch the fabric.

Use wool-safe detergent

Pick a mild, non-bio detergent designed for wool. Harsh detergents and fabric softeners can break down merino’s natural fibres and reduce performance.

Wash with care

  • Wash with similar lightweight fabrics
  • Turn garments inside out to reduce pilling
  • Close zips and avoid washing with items that have hooks or Velcro

Skip the tumble dryer

After washing, gently reshape your garment and lay it flat to dry. Hanging while wet can stretch the wool, and tumble dryers can cause shrinkage.

Bonus: Less washing needed

Thanks to its natural odour resistance, merino doesn’t need frequent washing. Often, a quick airing out is all it needs between wears.

With proper care, your merino will stay soft, fresh, and functional for years.
